A Solution to the Sitting Problem

I love this video, but feel that it’s a little short in progressive and useful solutions to our sitting problem.

When we sit as much as we do, our brain begins to habituate to sitting. Meaning, once you get up and start moving, your brain “knows” your body as shortened and compressed. Many people have experienced that just making themselves sit straighter is actually difficult and unpleasant – creating stress in parts of the spine or shoulders and often making breathing even more difficult.

We need to rediscover how to lengthen and coordinate our movements with the all the 360 joints and 700 muscles. Deciding to just make ourselves stronger can actually aggravate this problem, leading to many of the orthopaedic quandaries we find ourselves in. The Feldenkrais Method will help you take charge of your movement. Rediscover how much better you can feel when you spend some time relearning how everything works together. It will also make your strength training much safer and much more effective.

Anthropologis Margaret Mead said it best –

“This is the most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function. We’re condemning millions of people to a deteriorated old age that’s not necessary.”

We are grateful for the medical care that’s available to us. But before mobility and pain problems advance too far, consider spending that hour in a Feldenkrais session rather than in the waiting room. Thousands of people are glad they did.
